We train patients who are starting methotrexate injections to self-inject at home.

What do Methotrexate injections involve?

Patients are seen face to face and shown how to use the injection pens, using a demonstrator pen. These pens are pre-filled and have needle-safe guards. In the clinic, patients are taught how to safely handle, administer and dispose of the pens and deal with spillages. When ready, patients self-inject their first dose in clinic under supervision.

The current brand used in the hospital is Metoject. You can see more information about this here:

Nordimet is another brand in the UK, though not currently stocked in the hospital:

Methofill is not recommended as it requires a larger sized bin, which current local waste disposal in the community does not support.

Referral and appointments

New patients are referred from members of the Rheumatology team.

I work every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in Rheumatology and in pharmacy on Thursday as part of the ward based pharmacy teams.
