The Day case unit is designed to improve patient access to their rheumatology treatment such as intravenous infusions. The daycase unit is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 16:30 and closed weekends and bank holidays. The day-case unit has five reclining treatment chairs for patients to receive their treatments. We give infusions to patients with all types of arthritis, connective tissue diseases, and osteoporosis.

What happens when I arrive?

When you attend the unit, a member of staff will welcome and greet you and take you to where the treatment will take place. We will explain to you about your infusion/treatment.

It is important that, prior to each treatment, you have an up-to-date blood test, and bring a urine sample with you. We will perform routine checks such as weight, blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and obtain a verbal history from you on each visit. If you are not well, or have been given oral antibiotics due to infection, please ring the daycase unit for advice to save making an unnecessary journey.

Can I ask a question?

We encourage you to ask questions at any stage of your stay. We aim to administer your treatment safely, and with the minimum of discomfort possible. We are here to help and support you throughout your treatment journey. The staff will be able to answer any questions you may have to put your mind at ease and allow you to be comfortable throughout your treatment.

How long is the treatment?

It depends on what treatment you are about to receive. If you need information regarding approximate length of time of your treatment, please contact the rheumatology daycase unit as treatment lengths may vary. We provide light snacks: tea/coffee and biscuits and variety of sandwiches for lunch for patients receiving all-day infusions. We have a radio on the unit, and we encourage patients to bring something to do whilst having treatment, for example a book or magazine, as we are unable to provide entertainment.

Can I bring someone with me?

There is a waiting room for relatives/visitors with a drinks machine. The unit can be very busy, and it is not always possible to accommodate relatives/visitors within the Day Unit.
