We have six consultant rheumatologists working across the Trust providing specialist clinics and services to patients at Worcestershire Royal, the Alexandra Hospital and Kidderminster Hospital and Treatment Centre.

Consultants

Dr Caroline Cardy  – Consultant Rheumatologist and Rheumatology Clinical Lead

I qualified from the University of Oxford Medical School in 2002 and moved to the West Midlands for my rheumatology specialist training in 2006.  I have been a substantive consultant rheumatologist at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust since 2013. I have a PhD in Marfan syndrome. My specialist interests are early inflammatory arthritis and disorders of connective tissue. I am currently the clinical lead for the rheumatology service.

Dr Bernard Dyke – Consultant Rheumatologist

I graduated from the University of Southampton in 2011.  I moved to the West Midlands in 2013 in order to undertake specialist training in rheumatology, and was appointed as a consultant rheumatologist at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust in 2022.  My specialist interest is in early inflammatory arthritis, and I am pursuing training in musculoskeletal ultrasound.  I run a combined clinic at Worcestershire Royal Hospital with colleagues from the renal department.

Dr Ashok Rai – Consultant Rheumatologist

I graduated from Birmingham Medical School in 1985 and subsequently specialised in rheumatology. I was a senior registrar at the Walsgrave Hospital, Coventry before being appointed as a consultant rheumatologist in Worcester in 1995.

Dr Helen Bateman – Consultant Rheumatologist

I qualified from Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London University in 1989 and then worked at Princess Mary’s R.A.F. Hospital Halton and Northampton General Hospital. After completing my GMC registration, I obtained further specialist training in USA in General Medicine and Allergy & Immunology at Rutgers University N.J. as well as Rheumatology Fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell University New York. 

I practiced predominantly at Veterans Hospitals in N.J. and Florida. I enjoyed teaching adult clinical Rheumatology to future doctors at the University of South Florida, before joining the Rheumatology team at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in 2023. My experience is mostly with inflammatory arthritis, including Rheumatoid and Psoriatic as well as Ankylosing Spondylitis, autoimmune and connective tissue diseases such as Lupus. I also treat Osteoporosis and all aspects of general Rheumatology.

Dr Musaab Elmamoun – Locum Consultant Rheumatologist

I completed my specialist training in rheumatology from the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland in 2016. I then moved to Canada to complete a fellowship in systemic lupus erythematosus and psoriatic arthritis from the University of Toronto. I have been a locum consultant rheumatologist at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust since 2018. I am the lead for the osteoporosis service. My specialist interests are systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriatic arthritis and osteoporosis.

Dr Gamal Safi – Locum Consultant Rheumatologist

I graduated with MBBS from University of Khartoum in Sudan in1996, completed both MRCP UK and MRCPI (Ireland) in 2010. I did my basic general medical specialist training and clinical rheumatology registrar training in Ireland. I obtained a postgraduate Diploma in Therapeutics (2012) from Cardiff University and MSc of Clinical Rheumatology (2016) from University of Manchester.  I joined Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust in 2018. I treat all aspects of rheumatology with a special interest in lupus, connective tissue diseases and vasculitis.

Clinical Nurse Specialists

  • Angie Lord - Clinical Nurse Specialist in Rheumatology
    Angie Lord - Clinical Nurse Specialist in Rheumatology

    I qualified as Registered Nurse in1997 at Perpetual Help University in the Philippines. I worked for 4 years as a Medical-Surgical Nurse in the Philippines before coming to the UK in April 2001. I initially served in Highfield Ward at Worcestershire Royal Hospital as Staff nurse. In July 2011, I moved to Rheumatology day case as the full time sister.  I am currently studying my Non-medical prescriber course.

  • Kirsty Edwards, RGN, NMP, MSc – Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist in Rheumatology
    Kirsty Edwards, RGN, NMP, MSc – Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist in Rheumatology

    Kirsty trained at the Worcester School of Nursing and qualified as an RGN in 1992.

    She started work in Rheumatology on the Highfield Ward at Worcester in 1995. It was here that she gained her knowledge, interest and passion for rheumatology nursing which has to date spanned more than 20 years. During this time she completed an ENB course in Rheumatology Nursing at Oswestry. She was delighted to be offered the position of Clinical Nurse Specialist in 2004. As part of this role Kirsty undertook non-medical prescribing and became the lead biologics nurse; this allows her to play a key role in the monitoring and prescribing of these new drugs that have transformed the lives of patients with inflammatory arthritis.

    In 2013 she completed her MSc in Rheumatology Nursing which she feels has underpinned her Rheumatology knowledge and practice. She continues to enjoy the challenges of the role and the changing landscape of both Rheumatology care and the NHS and feels privileged to be allowed into her patients’ lives to work with them during their journey living with a long term condition.   • Teresa Ford – Clinical Nurse Specialist in Rheumatology
    Teresa Ford – Clinical Nurse Specialist in Rheumatology

    Teresa qualified as an Enrolled Nurse in 1991 at the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch. After qualifying, Teresa started her Rheumatology career at the Highfield Hospital in Droitwich and therefore has nearly 30 years of experience in rheumatology. She then went on to complete her conversion course gaining her RGN qualification in 1994. In 1991, Highfield Hospital closed, Teresa moved with the department to the Worcester Newtown Site. She became junior ward sister on the Highfield ward.

    As Rheumatology has changed over the years, in-patient services have declined and Daycase services have expanded. Teresa has played a pivotal role in the on-going development of the Rheumatology Daycase Unit in her role as Unit Sister during 2006-2010. This service has enabled the provision of a significant increase in treatment options available to patients. Teresa continues to support this service. In 2010, Teresa was appointed to join the Specialist Nursing team. She is passionate about the delivery of safe, evidence based care to her patients.

  • Alison Evans – Clinical Nurse Specialist in Rheumatology
    Alison Evans – Clinical Nurse Specialist in Rheumatology

    Alison qualified as a Registered Nurse at Worcester University in 2006. Prior to which she had worked within social care for 19 years. After qualifying, Alison started her nursing career in the Out Patients Department at Kidderminster treatment centre and worked alongside many specialities. In 2019 Alison came over to work in rheumatology Out Patient Department and made several positive improvements to the delivery of patient care whilst also undertaking her top up nursing degree qualification. 

    In February 2020 Alison started to build up her knowledge and skills in the day case unit working closely alongside Sister Angie lord, who gave her the knowledge and confidence to move forward in her nursing career. In October 2020 Alison joined the clinical nurse specialist team. Alison has a wealth of knowledge and experience from her nursing care background and is always willing to both learn and share alongside her students in Rheumatology. With care and kindness Alison is developing into the role of the rheumatology clinical nurse specialist, and endeavours to provide evidenced based nursing care to her patients.

  • Rachael Carr, RN DipHe NMP – Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist in Rheumatology

    Rachael qualified as a Registered Nurse in 2013 from the University of Plymouth. After 18 months of working in Dementia and Palliative Care within the nursing home sector, she joined the Worcester Rheumatology Team in 2015, working as a Staff Nurse in the Outpatient Department and Day Case Unit. It was here Rachael worked closely with the team and developed her knowledge, skills, and passion within this unique area of medicine. In 2017 she completed the ASPiRE Course (Contemporary Rheumatology) at Keele University.

    In 2018, Rachael left Worcester and joined the Rheumatology Department at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust as a Junior Clinical Nurse Specialist. Over the next four years, she continued to develop her knowledge and skill base, completed her Non-Medical Prescribing in 2021 and became one of the Lead CNSs at City and Sandwell Hospital.

    In January 2023, Rachael re-joined Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust as part of the Rheumatology Clinical Nurse Specialist Team and works full time. Rachael’s ambition has always been to make a real and positive change to patient care, and she is passionate about enabling patients to understand their condition, provide safe and effective care to her patients.

  • Deepa Raghavan – Osteoporosis Nurse Specialist

    Deepa qualified as a registered general nurse in 1998 from India. She started her career working in the medical wards and Coronary care unit in India for 6 years before she migrated to the UK in 2004. After moving to England, she worked at a GP surgery and in nursing homes.

    In 2016, Deepa started working in the Outpatient department at Kidderminster Treatment Centre and worked alongside various clinics where she gained valuable knowledge and experience in different specialities. She then worked with the Vascular team as a clinical nurse specialist until joining the Rheumatology team in 2021 as the Osteoporosis nurse.

Rheumatology Occupational Therapy team

We are occupational therapy clinical specialists in Rheumatology, and together we share the leadership of the rheumatology OT service across Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are both passionate about supporting our patients and enabling them to achieve their occupational goals through the use of a wide range of treatments, and we have a strong focus on encouraging self-management for our patients.

We are actively involved in the education of others within the specialism and offer learning experiences for our rotational Occupational Therapists, OT students from Coventry University and the University of Worcester, and other members of the MDT. We are members of the Royal College of Occupational Therapy specialist interest group for Rheumatology, hold BSR membership, and also have links to other specialist groups in the areas of Chronic Pain and hand therapy. We utilise these links for networking purposes and education to keep abreast of developments within practice and to maintain our Continuing Professional Development. We are actively involved in service development, clinical audit and research, and currently involved in the WorkWell research trial led by Salford University, testing the effectiveness of work advice and vocational rehabilitation for people with arthritis

Rheumatology Physiotherapist team

I’m June Blything. I am the team lead physiotherapist based at Worcester Royal Hospital. I have been a physiotherapist for 30 years and have specialised in Rheumatology and hydrotherapy for the past 26 years.

I have experience in treating all Rheumatology conditions and am also able to do Joint injections. I lead a dedicated team of physiotherapists that support all the rheumatology patients who attend our Trust on all 3 sites.

Rheumatology Pharmacist 

Monica Gauntlett
Monica Gauntlett

My name is Monica Gauntlett and I am a pharmacist in the rheumatology team. I qualified over 20 years ago, working mainly in hospital pharmacy. I joined the Trust in 2009 and the Rheumatology team in 2017.

I support the rheumatology team and patients with medication enquiries, monitoring and support for patients on DMARD’s and working with the pharmacy team to ensure smooth supply and access to medication for our patients. This includes ensuring we get the best value medication within our allocated treatment budget.

I see rheumatology patients in clinic to counsel them on starting oral DMARD’s. I also train patients who are starting methotrexate injections to self-inject at home.

I am based in the Rheumatology department in Aconbury West, Worcester Royal Hospital, but also have some clinics at Redditch Hospital.

Diagnostic and Interventional Musculoskeletal Sonographer

Mr Aamir Safdar-Khan

Aamir is an experienced Musculoskeletal Clinician as well as Diagnostic and Interventional Ultrasound Musculoskeletal Sonographer. Aamir is an expert musculoskeletal ultrasound practitioner and performs variety of ultrasound-guided injections.

After completing MSc in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy from the University of East London in 2009, he worked for NHS before pursuing Post-Graduate Certificate focused on Musculoskeletal Ultrasound as well as Soft tissue and Joint Injections from the Essex UniversityHe has completed his independent prescribing from Coventry University and currently utilising his skills at Worcestershire Royal Hospital Rheumatology Department. 

Rheumatology Outpatients team

  • Shiya Mary Joy, Staff Nurse
    Shiya Mary Joy, Staff Nurse

    I qualified as Registered Nurse in 2007 from one of the universities in India. I worked as a staff nurse in other countries including India, Saudi Arabia and Oman before coming to the UK in November 2019.

    I initially worked in A&E at Worcestershire Royal Hospital as Staff nurse. In June 2021, I moved to Rheumatology working as a full time staff nurse across the outpatient department and Day Case Unit.

    Sam Gower, Registered Nursing Associate

    Sam is a Registered Nursing Associate. She has worked in Rheumatology since 2018 after starting her healthcare career in 2002. Sam has an avid interest in Rheumatology and wants to pursue this further in her career, she will be starting her training to become a Registered Nurse in the near future. Sam enjoys working with such a close knit team and having a therapeutic long term relationship with our patients.

    Sharon Bahajou, Healthcare Support Worker

    After becoming a child carer, Sahron fell in love with healthcare and joined the Trust as a healthcare worker in 2001. Her experiences have given her a great understanding of the impact of chronic long term conditions which she shares with her colleagues and patients. Her patients are why she cares and she loves doing the job with such a great team on Rheumatology.
