Point of care is the performance of pathology tests in the clinical areas near patients and outside of the laboratory. 

The advantage being rapidly available results which aid clinical decisions.

Point of care testing (POCT)

POCT biomedical instruments should only be used by staff who have been trained by the laboratory or instrument company. Contravention of the point of care testing policy could lead to disciplinary action and also result in medico-legal problems.

The day-to-day involvement of pathology staff in POCT includes:

  •  Equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
  •  Training and retraining of appropriate staff
  •  Organisation of the supply of Quality Control (IQC)
  •  Monitoring External Quality Assurance (EQA)

There are currently more than 230 glucose meters in operation covered by the POCT team on the various different sites.
