Usually requested with insulin for investigation of hypoglycaemia (Glucose <2.5 mmol/L).

Also requested in differentiation of type 1 and type 2 diabetes When interpreting C-peptide as a marker of pancreatic reserve in DM it is important to take the patient’s renal function into account.

Guidelines

Pre-analytical

If hypoglycaemia check, only send if glucose <3.0 mmol/L. If required urgently contact duty biochemist.

Sample must be frozen within 12 hour of sampling

Send sample to lab immediately if insulin also required.
