Siblings

Having a baby on the neonatal unit not only impacts the infant and the parents but the wider family too. Having a sibling on the neonatal unit can be a stressful time. There will be changes in their routine and the time a parent is able to spend with them may change. These changes can cause an emotional response. The emotions siblings may experience include sadness, worry, anger and confusion.

The Sensory Beginnings website has some useful recommendations about how to support your other children when they visit your baby.

  • Prepare them for the unit environment. Discuss what it may look or sound like.
  • Describe what they can do whilst with their sibling. Read a book, draw a picture or have a cuddle
  • Plan visits with the neonatal team. The care team can help support siblings being involved in care.
