On September 15 a team of over 50 runners took on Worcester City Run raising over £10,000 for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity.

With Worcester City Run organised by Events of the North, celebrating its 10th anniversary, Team Worcestershire Acute runners took on either the 10 kilometres or Half Marathon distances, with runners choosing to run in support of hospital services close to their hearts.

Charlotte, who is running in thanks for care received says: ‘The main reason I have signed up is to raise money for the vascular ward at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, I had surgery in March and was supported by the team on Laurel 1. I’m very grateful to all the staff involved in my care and was thinking of ways to give back in thanks and thought this would be perfect.”

Adam and Becky, whose daughter had treatment in the children’s oncology service, are also taking on the challenge in support of the charity’s specialist fund the Children of Worcestershire Cancer Fund. On the run Becky says: “Adam and I are extremely motivated to support this charity as our daughter had a Wilms tumour at the age of three and a half years old. She had joint care with Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Worcestershire Royal Hospital and the team were unbelievable. They were so supportive and continue to support us. We are both very motivated to help the charities which have supported us and families in our situation.”

Neata and Rob, took on the challenge with a group of 22 friends and family in memory of their daughter Neath. Neata says: “Our daughter, Neath Simpson 12 years old, had been poorly in 2022 and in June 2022 Neath was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital where she met the amazing Baylon (Paediatric Oncology Consultant) who diagnosed her with Lymphoma.

The Oncology team, Baylon, Dawn, Tracey and Charlotte go above and beyond to help put smiles on the faces of children going through cancer treatment. Neath actually looked forward to going into clinic as she knew they would all make a fuss of her.

Neath sadly passed away on the 28th May 2023, but her friends and family wanted to take this opportunity to raise money for this charity in her name so the oncology team can continue to support other children going through cancer treatment.”

About the run, Sophie Burt, Head of Fundraising and Community Development says: “The support from our community has been wonderful to see, the runners forming this year’s team have really gone the extra mile with their fundraising and are set to make a real difference for patients, staff and services across our hospitals. The team total sits at over £10,000 raised, a wonderful sum to have raised, thank you to our runners.”

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity supports patients, staff and services in Worcestershire’s acute hospitals; the Alexandra Hospital Redditch, Kidderminster Hospital and Treatment Centre and Worcestershire Royal Hospital Worcester. Our aim is to make the experience less difficult, the environment more comfortable and the working day easier.
