Prostate Cancer Survivorship programme for Worcestershire (telephone follow-up)

Having received a potentially curative treatment for prostate cancer, it remains important that your recovery is regularly monitored. The survivorship scheme was established in 2009 and is recognised by our clinicians as a monitoring service that will meet patients’ needs during their recovery.

Specific criteria must be met to be enrolled, being at least two years since curative prostate cancer treatment with a current, stable PSA.

Consultant urological surgeon Mr. Makar is the clinical lead for the programme.

Patients can only be referred to the programme by clinicians via the clinic setting.

Specialist nurses

The Specialist Nurses are aware that such a diagnosis and subsequent treatment can affect people in different ways. If required during our contact with patients, we use the Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA) framework to help provide support tailored to patients as individuals. If ever required, we can support, signpost on and refer to specialists accordingly.

Once patients are enrolled, the database is designed to trigger alerts if the PSA becomes overdue or if the PSA rises by a pre-determined amount unique to each patient that may need attention.

PSA Monitoring

The system produces a worklist which helps to inform the nurses when the next PSA is due, they make the next PSA request and post a reminder to each patient, noting the month it is required.

Patients are required to arrange their PSA blood test as usual and contact the nurses directly for results.

If the PSA result requires it, the nurses will contact the consultant directly for their advice on a plan moving forward, writing to the GP with any changes to follow up. For these patients PSA monitoring is lifelong.

Health and wellbeing

We can also offer health and wellbeing advice and relevant information accordingly. Trustwide health and wellbeing events are available for people affected by cancer, their families and carers.

Our Living with and Beyond Cancer Team runs these throughout the year across the county. For more information on these, email: wah-tr.lwbc@nhs.net or call 01905 763333 asking for extension 38785.

There is a Cancer Services app available for patients to download for more information and support to you and those around you. To find more information on the app, visit: Worcestershire Cancer Services App
