Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic

Patients coming into hospital for an operation will be assessed by the Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic.

Your pre-assessment will:

  • Assess your fitness for anaesthesia and surgery
  • Give you advice on how to get fit before surgery
  • Provide you with medicine advice before surgery
  • Provide you with information about coming into hospital, your length of stay and discharge date
  • Arrange important tests, including for infections, prior to your surgery

Before your operation, you will be asked to complete an online health questionnaire called Synopsis iQ. Based on the results of your questionnaire you will either:

  • Come into hospital before your surgery for some infection screening tests (i.e. MRSA). You may also have some blood tests or a heart tracing (ECG) at this time
  • Have a detailed discussion with a pre-operative assessment nurse about your health. This will be done by telephone or a face to face appointment. You will still need to attend hospital before surgery for infection screening.
  • If your health means that surgery may carry a higher than usual risk, you may have a discussion with an anaesthetist before your surgery. This will be done by telephone or a face to face appointment.
  • All patients current require a COVID test 48-72 hours before their surgery. This will be arranged for you.

Before your appointment

Please ensure you have complete your online questionnaire (Synopsis iQ), if asked to do so.

If you have questions please write then down so your pre-assessment nurse can answer them.

If your assessment is by telephone please ensure you have good reception and are in a quiet place.

Please ensure you have a list of your medications that you currently take, including their strength and how often you take them.

Changing or cancelling your appointment

Please tell us if you need to change or cancel an appointment so we can offer it to someone else. Telephone details are in the Contact Section below.

Useful information

How will I be assessed before my surgery?

  • Usually you will complete an online health questionnaire called Synopsis iQ before your operation
  • Details on accessing this questionnaire will be provided at the surgeons clinic or will be sent to your closer to the time of surgery
  • The Pre-operative nurse will use your questionnaire to decide if you need a more detailed discussion about your health. This discussion could be with a nurse or anaesthetist.
  • If you need a more detailed discussion this can usually be done over the phone, occasionally you will be asked to attend hospital.
  • Most people require some routine bloods and a heart tracing to be done before surgery.
  • You will be screened for important infections including COVID 19 (48 -72 hours before surgery), MRSA and CPE (only if you have been in another hospital within the last 12 months)
