Test information

FRESH specimens are essential and all specimens should be sent to the laboratory immediately after collection. Ensure that all specimens are fully labelled with patient’s identification.

Cytology samples are kept for 2 weeks post authorisaition – Requests for additional examinations on the same primary sample must be requested prior to this.

Guidelines

If transport is delayed, or out of laboratory hours refrigeration is preferable. Any materials used in taking these samples must be discarded in an approved clinical waste or sharps container.

Brushes used for brush washing liquid based cytology preparation must be thoroughly rinsed in  10 ml of CytoLyt as soon after collection as possible.  Any delay in this process may compromise both the quality and quantity of diagnostic material shed from the sampler into the vial and result in potentially suboptimal preparations upon which the diagnosis may be based.

Out of normal cellular pathology laboratory working hours, please store this specimen in the fridge until they can be delivered to the laboratory.
