Surgical Care Practitioners

Request:

I am writing to ask for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 regarding the use of Surgical Care Practitioners (SCPs) performing lipomas and sebaceous cysts, varicose vein surgery and laparoscopic colorectal procedures from January 2016 to December 2023. I would like the information in the following manner or at least containing the following:

a) year of surgical procedure

b) category of surgical procedure e.g. lipomas and sebaceous cysts, varicose vein surgery and laparoscopic colorectal 

c) Procedure carried out by core trainee; specialist or associate specialist doctor or consultant

d) time taken for the procedure by core trainee; specialist or associate specialist doctor or consultant

e) length of stay based on the procedure carried out by core trainee; specialist or associate specialist doctor or consultant

f)  number of re-admissions based on the procedure carried out by core trainee; specialist or associate specialist doctor or consultant

g)  number of transfusions based on the procedure carried out by core trainee; specialist or associate specialist doctor or consultant

Response:

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals employs 2 staff members that are Surgical Care Practitioners

The procedures they carry out are lipoma and sebaceous cysts only

Caveats:

Limited to daycase lipoma and sebaceous cyst procedures completed in theatre by our 2 Surgical Care Practioners

Time taken in theatre for Lipoma ranged between 13 and 80 minutes

Time taken in theatre for Sebaceous Cyst ranged between 15 and 90 minutes

No procedures had a transfusion involved

The number of readmission is withheld it was below 5 and Under section 40 (ii) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, statistically low numbers that potentially identify personal data are required to be withheld because of the Trusts obligation to protect personal data under the Data Protection Act 2018
