Bariatric surgery

Bariatric team

Since we introduced our bariatric service in 2012 it has expanded and we now take referrals from across Worcestershire, Herefordshire and beyond.

Examples of weight-loss surgery include gastric band (LAGB), gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. They help people lose weight by restricting the amount of food that can be eaten or reducing the amount of food that can be absorbed - or sometimes both.

Many people find keeping weight off long-term much harder than losing it. Surgery is known to be one of the most effective ways to lose weight and keep it off.

This is important because being overweight increases the chance of suffering a serious health problem in the future. Obese people have a higher risk of developing serious conditions including arthritis, diabetes, stroke, infertility, depression and some cancers.

We follow the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines to help us identify the patients who will benefit from treatment and we can only consider weight-loss surgery for patients who meet the NICE criteria. You can read the full NICE guidelines here: https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg43
