Palliative and end of life care

care for people

Our Specialist Palliative Care team provides advice and support for patients with advanced life-limiting illnesses, as well as for their families and carers. This is a service we offer seven days a week, with specialist nurses available to help patients with complex needs or uncontrolled symptoms from 8.30am to 4.30pm every weekend and every bank holiday.

Our team is based at the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch and Worcestershire Royal Hospital, and we can:

  • Advice and management ofcomplex symptoms such as pain, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, breathlessness, and fatigue (overwhelming tiredness)
  • Psychological support and advice to patients, carers and significant family members
  • Liaison with nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, chaplaincy, social services and other people involved in your care both in hospital and at home
  • Liaison with local specialist palliative care services, hospices, day care services and community teams
  • The opportunity to discuss your preferences and wishes to help you plan future care
  • Advise on practical things, such as finances

SUPPORT

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Trust is committed to high quality, supported, coordinated, individualised care for patients and those important to them at the end of life.

We recognise that supporting families and carers of those at the end of life is important, and as part of our Trust vision and behaviours, we have listened to feedback from those who have visited, and learned and have introduced SUPPORT.

SUPPORT aims to highlight the small, practical things all staff can do to support you if you are visiting someone who is receiving end of life care in Worcestershire Royal Hospital or The Alexandra Hospital. This includes free parking, compassionate visiting, refreshments and written information should this be helpful to you.
