Our radiology department provides scans, x-rays and procedures to diagnose a range of conditions.

You might come across our services if you are in hospital and your doctor wants you to have some tests done. You can also be referred to us by your GP.

  • Our radiology services

We provide scanning and diagnostic tests in acute and community hospitals across the county.

    Plain x-rays

We provide plain x-rays at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, Kidderminster Hospital and Treatment Centre, Worcestershire Royal Hospital as well as in community hospitals in Evesham, Malvern, Bromsgrove and Tenbury.

An x-ray takes a picture of the inside of a body part. It involves a small dose of radiation to the area to be examined.

You may be asked to change into an x-ray gown for some examinations.

The radiographer will position you for the x-ray. This may be standing, lying or sitting down.

Most x-rays take about 10 minutes, but may be longer if multiple areas are requested.

    Ultrasound scans

We provide ultrasound scans at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, Kidderminster Hospital and Treatment Centre, Worcestershire Royal Hospital as well as in community hospitals in Evesham, Malvern and Bromsgrove.

An ultrasound examination obtains a picture of the inside of the body without the use of x-rays. It involves high frequency sound waves, which are transmitted through the skin and reflected by the internal organs. These echoes form a picture on the screen, which can be examined for any abnormality. There is no pain from an ultrasound examination.

Many parts of the body can be investigated by ultrasound, but the technique is commonly used to examine the abdominal organs, pelvis, heart and major blood vessels. Other areas, which may be examined, include the breasts, testes and thyroid gland.

Most pregnancies are also monitored by ultrasound examination to assess the age, health and position of the unborn baby.

    CT scans

We provide Computerised Tomography (CT or CAT scans) at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, Kidderminster Hospital and Treatment Centre,Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

A CT scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, muscles, fat and organs and contain more detailed than standard x-rays.

New CT scanners, offering the highest standard of scanning with the lowest dose of radiation possible, have been recently installed at the Alexandra and Kidderminster hospitals.

    MRI scans

We provide Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, Kidderminster Hospital and Treatment Centre, Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

MRI is an imaging technique using a strong magnetic field to produce high quality images. MRI can be used to image any part of the body and is particularly good for imaging soft tissue. It does not use x-rays so is not considered to be harmful.

Our MRI scanners at Kidderminster and Worcester provide the highest quality of images, increased accuracy of results and reduced examination times for our patients. The average time it takes for an MRI scan is now around 20 minutes.

We are now starting a project to replace the current machine at the Alexandra Hospital with a new state-of-the-art scanner. This continues our investment to improve our imaging services across the county.

Our systems have been tailored to offer the greatest level of comfort for you and an illuminated 'MoodLight' is available to help reduce any anxiety you may experience by producing a relaxing ambience in the room.
