Surgical robot appeal receives Mayoral support

A local cancer appeal has been chosen by the Mayor of Stourport-on-Severn as one of his charities of the year.

Cllr Cliff Brewer will support the Worcestershire Prostate Cancer Surgical Robot (Rory the Robot) Appeal, which aims to raise £1.6 million for a surgical robot to treat patients with prostate cancer across the county, through various charity events.

Rory is a surgical system, which allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery. This means surgeons operate through a few small incisions instead of a large open incision.

Cllr Cliff Brewer, Mayor of Stourport-on-Severn said he was delighted to support the appeal by including it as one of his charities for the coming Mayoral year.

He continued “Prostate cancer contributes to many fatalities, one day hopefully, a remedy will be found to counter act this condition.

“The Rory the Robot appeal helps to raise much needed funds and awareness for this very worthy cause.”

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust began their Rory the Robot appeal to further improve the experience of its prostate cancer patients. With Rory’s assistance patients will benefit from less pain, minimal blood loss and reduced complications.

In Worcestershire alone there are 2500 men surviving prostate cancer at any one time, with about 500 new prostate cancer cases diagnosed every year.
