Local musician holds concert to raise funds for hospital eye unit

Patients in Worcestershire suffering from eye conditions will benefit from more specialist equipment, thanks to a kind donation to the ophthalmology department at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Louise Vale, a professional musician, made the donation following her latest concert at St Matthias’ Church, Malvern Link in June. The concert featured many of her young pupils, aged six to 17 years old, performing a variety of styles from jazz, to movie soundtracks and classical music, as well as performances from Louise, accompanied by Tim Sidford on piano.

Louise was inspired to donate to the ophthalmology department at Worcestershire Royal Hospital for a number of reasons. Louise said: "Supporting a local connection can be more meaningful, resonating with local people. I think we are privileged to have such a good ophthalmology department at Worcestershire Royal Hospital under the expert leadership of Mr Sharma, who is genuinely caring towards his patients.

“I was also aware the department had recently won 'best glaucoma ophthalmic unit in the United Kingdom' in the International Glaucoma Association annual awards, so for all these reasons I was keen to support them in their fundraising efforts for more specialist equipment. As the experience has been tremendously well received by Mr Sharma and his colleagues, I am keen to continue fundraising for the department in future".

Lead Consultant for Ophthalmology, Mr Tarun Sharma said: “We are very honoured to receive donations like this from the public and it is fantastic to see local people supporting our hospital. It is also worth mentioning the amount of hours of organisation, planning and teaching that Louise put in to making this concert happen to raise the funds for the department.”

A distinguished violinist, Louise has performed with many of the UK's leading orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as recording for EMI and broadcasting for BBC Radio 3. She has also performed in Germany, France, Spain, and in major national venues including the Royal Albert Hall.
