Cancer patients to benefit from local support group donation

Patients who have been diagnosed with cancer are set to benefit from a donation to a local cancer support group to fund the production of a new patient information DVD.

Trevor and Jean Parsons raised nearly £300 at a fundraising garden tea party in aid of GUSTY - a support group for people diagnosed with or recovering from oesophageal and gastric cancers, led by staff from Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

The GUTSY team are looking to raise funds to make an information film that patients can take away with them on DVD to show the pathway from diagnosis to treatment and introducing them to the team who will be caring for them.

The support group is led by Consultant Surgeon, Martin Wadley; Sharon Brown, Nurse Practitioner; and Clinical Nurse Specialists, Donna Traynor and Lizzy Pearce.

Trevor has been attending GUTSY meetings regularly for the last three years having received treatment for cancer and says he wanted to give something back for the help they’ve given him.

Trevor said: “These support groups are fantastic. Everyone is able to talk completely freely and share their problems together. Everyone thinks they have a different problem until you mention it and there are others there who are experiencing the same thing. It has been fantastic for getting helpful advice and putting our minds at rest.”

Jean said: “We’re so pleased to be able to offer this little donation to the support group. We’ve always had excellent service here at the Worcestershire Royal, so it’s nice to show some support for all the work they do.”

Lizzy Pearce, one of the staff helping run GUTSY meetings said: “It’s lovely to see our patients so involved with the group. A lot of people think once you’ve been treated it’s ‘thank you, goodbye!’ but it isn’t, we offer on-going support to our patients through groups like this.

“We have a regular core of people who keep coming back and really benefit from our meetings. It would be amazing to be able to provide these patients with an informative DVD that they can take away with them to help ease their fears before or after surgery.”
