County nurses proud to nurse

While nurses around the globe celebrate International Nurses’ Day today, Tuesday 12 May 2015, nurses from Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust are sharing why they are proud of their profession.

Senior Sister Amy Read has been working as a ward sister for two years, leading her team on the general surgery ward at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

She said “I really enjoy leading my friendly, hardworking, and caring team. We all strive to provide the best possible care for our patients. I find my role challenging at times but really rewarding.

“I come to work to make a difference to patient care. I provide patients with the best possible experience by leading my highly-skilled team. We all work extremely well together, everyone brings in excellent individual traits and by working together and supporting each other we can achieve our goals.”

Karen Apps, Senior Sister said “As sister of Chestnut Head & Neck ward I have a chance to influence junior staff and other colleagues, to inspire and motivate them to achieve all that is possible.

“Dealing with issues such as bed capacity, staffing and HR problems can be exhausting, time consuming and challenging, but once completed they leave me with a sense of achievement and satisfaction.

“I have the opportunity to manage, organise, influence and change patient care and staff experiences, raise and maintain standards, set new goals and develop the ward, whilst still being able to have patient contact.

“I am very proud of my area and my staff, we are a dynamic team which is growing with confidence.  It is my job to ensure the staff and the patients have the best care for themselves and each other, if the staff feel cared for and nurtured they will pass this onto the patients and improve their experience.”

As part of the celebrations, midwives and nurses at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust will be holding a Skype session with nurses and midwives from the King Saud Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

For those interested in finding out more about a career in midwifery, a recruitment day is being held at Worcestershire Royal Hospital on Saturday 13 June. More information about the event will be available on the trust’s website closer to the time.
