Improving the experience for emergency patients

Plans are underway to improve the experience of emergency patients by increasing the size of the Emergency Department (ED) at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

 

A modular unit will link the current ED and Medical Assessment Unit, to provide an additional waiting area, an additional triage room, a new minors area with consulting space for GPs and Advanced Nurse Practitioners, an extra adolescent cubicle and a new four-trolley high care area.

Dr James France, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, said: “The level of ED attendance at Worcester is currently more than 50 per cent greater than was originally planned for when the hospital was built. The extra room will help us to triage patients much quicker, and also improve privacy and dignity.”

The plans form part of a wider piece of work to improve patient flow through the hospital. This includes building a new purpose built discharge lounge to help ensure that patients who are medically fit to leave hospital can get home quicker, freeing up beds for those who need admitting.

Robin Snead, Divisional Director of Operations for Medicine, said: “It will enable us to transfer more patients to the discharge lounge when they are fit to leave us, rather than them having to wait in a bed, which can happen now if the current facility is full. It will also improve our ability to discharge patients quicker, as it will have additional facilities such as dedicated points for organising patient transport, and a central area for pharmacy requests.”

Plans have also been submitted for up to an extra 150 car parking spaces on site.

The Trust has submitted a bid to the Department of Health for £4.95 million to pay for the work. Subject to necessary planning approval it is hoped the extra capacity will be open by the end of the year.
