A junior sister at Worcestershire Royal Hospital has been shortlisted for the Practice Supervisor of the year award, at this year’s Student Nursing Times awards.

Lucy Sullivan was nominated by one of her mentees, student nurse, Jessica Morris for her outstanding contribution to the practice education of nursing students on placement at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Lucy, who qualified as an adult nurse in 2012 and became a Junior Sister within two years, has been mentoring student nurses for almost ten years. A student herself, currently completing a top-up degree at the University of Worcester, Lucy said she was overwhelmed to have been nominated for this award by one of her mentees.

“I feel honoured that Jessica has taken the time to nominate me for this award. She was an exceptional student nurse with the knowledge, skills and work ethic expected from a third-year student. We worked so well together, and she instantly became one of the team.”

On mentorship Lucy added: “I believe the mentorship role is important to guide and support students and encourage best practice for our future nurses.

“My approach is very welcoming, and I am passionate about student coaching in practice (SCIP) as I believe this gives students the confidence to recognise their ability and give them the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills.

“If we remain professional and treat our student nurses with the respect that they deserve, then in return they will achieve more and reach their true potential.

“It is lovely to see a student’s journey from student nurse to colleague and friend.”

On nominating her mentor, student nurse Jessica added: “I nominated Lucy as she makes her students feel seen, understood, valued, making us feel part of the team.

“She is what I aspire to be as a nurse and I hope that I will inspire other students when I am a practice supervisor, the way Lucy has inspired me.

“She should be proud of the difference she makes to her students time on placement.”

Deputy Chief Nurse for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, Jackie Edwards said: “I’m delighted that Lucy has been recognised for such as prestigious award, and proud that we are helping to have such a positive impact on our future workforce.

“To be shortlisted demonstrates her outstanding work over the last year and highlights Lucy’s commitment to coaching, motivating and educating our students.”

A good supervisor helps to shape a student nurse or midwife, and help inspire and motivate them throughout their course as well as their chosen career. They demonstrate empathy with their student, adapting their coaching methods to suit the individual, and provide an environment that encourages questions, informed debate and learning.

The Student Nursing Times Awards will be celebrated on Friday 27 May in a glittering live ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, bringing together the nursing community to shine a light on the brightest talent making their way into the profession.
