Volunteering with us

Help us make a difference today

Our volunteers are part of the caring team and work alongside us to enhance the experience of our patients, carers, families, visitors and our staff.

Volunteers make an invaluable contribution in lots of ways all of which support patient, carer, family and staff wellbeing. There are many opportunities to volunteer with us across our three main hospital sites and we have roles to suit anyone who has a passion for people and wants to make a difference.

There are lots of reasons why people want to volunteer with us – for many it is a chance to do something positive and to help people, for others they may have extra time to spare and would like to give their time to something that matters to them.

Volunteering can be rewarding and it can help to develop new skills and confidence.  It can be a stepping stone into employment or training, it creates opportunities to meet new people and make friends and it can improve health and wellbeing. It can also be fun.

How you can get involved?

We ask all volunteers to give regular hours to support our patients, carers and staff and that you commit initially to volunteer for a minimum of 6 months. Hours are flexible and you can increase or reduce your hours at any time. Some of our volunteers come in once a week for three or more hours and many come in more than once a week.

Starting the process

Please complete an application form and once we have received this we will arrange to meet you for an interview so you can find out more about us and we can find out more about you  – face to face or by telephone. We will spend time finding out about why you would like to volunteer, what your interest areas are and we will explore the types of roles you might be interested in.

Following the submission of your application form you will be contacted to arrange an interview either face to face or by telephone.

The interview will involve discussions on why you want to volunteer, your experience and the kind of role that interests you.

This interview process helps us find you a suitable volunteer placement within our Trust.

Many of our roles attract a high volume of applicants and the process can be competitive.

Will there be any training prior to starting?

Before you become a volunteer you will be invited to attend out Trust induction programme and complete E-Learning for Health modules.

Training is compulsory as we have a duty of care to our patients and to you. It is important for us to know that you have the necessary information to carry out volunteer activities in a safe manner and patients are not put at risk.

Whilst you are a volunteer you will need to attend yearly update training on selected topics. There are also other training opportunities available depending on the role you undertake.

Will I be given a uniform?

We provide uniforms to help you keep warm and cool depending on the weather. Our volunteers designed the uniforms with us and we ask everyone wears this so that they can be easily identified by patients, carers and staff.

All volunteers will be issued with an ID badge.

Can I park on-site?

Free parking is provided for all of our volunteers.

We'd love to hear from you

We have started to welcome a return of volunteers to our wards. We are prioritising the return of pre-pandemic ward volunteers which may result in a delay in processing new applications. Please bear with us if there is a slight delay with processing your application.

Patient and Public Forum

We are also looking for people interested in joining the Patient and Public Forum. People who join the forum are patient representatives. We invite members to visit our hospitals and take a look at the environment and the patient experience. They will be asked to work with us to find out where we are working well and where we can continue to improve. Members meet regularly as a group and work on specific projects as well as working in partnership with the Trust in lots of different ways.

Meet some of our amazing volunteers

Susan was the first volunteer back onto the wards after Covid. She was a regular volunteer prior to Covid and was really pleased to be able to return to Laurel 3 ward at Worcester Royal Hospital, where she met the staff and helped the patients once again.
Hazel and Ken, a husband and wife team were back on the wards at the Alexandra Hospital. They were both regular volunteers prior to Covid and have been volunteering for four years. They were both delighted to be back on Ward 14, seeing familar staff faces and helping our patients. Returning volunteers, Hazel and Ken explained to us why they volunteer: "We're so thrilled to be back on the ward. It helps the patients and it helps the staff. It's great to be back to help out. What else can we say? We just enjoy doing it."
