We’re looking for dedicated Specialty Doctors to join our friendly and growing Emergency Department team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. You’ll work across two of our sites: Worcestershire Royal Hospital, and the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

New £35 Million Emergency Department

Our state-of-the-art ED at Worcestershire Royal Hospital includes:

  • Purpose-built Paediatric Emergency Department
  • Co-located X-Ray and CT imaging
  • “Fit to sit” areas
  • Separate zones for Minor Injuries and ambulatory Mental Health
  • Enhanced Majors area
  • Multi-specialty assessment unit (SDEC) directly above the ED for faster, more efficient patient flow
  • A 7-bedded Resus unit

Dedicated Paediatric Emergency Department

Children now receive care in a specialist, child-friendly space, ensuring age-appropriate treatment in a welcoming environment.

Sunrise Electronic Patient Record (EPR)

One of the UK’s most transformational electronic record systems went live across the Trust in 2023. Sunrise EPR enables clinicians to access patient information at any time, on any computer screen, at any hospital site. The use of the EPR is vastly improving the patient’s experience and helping them feel confident we are working on their care in a joined-up way, improving multi-team communication and the accuracy of documentation of care. This system allows for timely diagnoses, reduced reliance on paper records, and seamless data integration across our Emergency Departments, Minor Injury Units (MIUs), and Same Day Emergency Care services.

From day one of joining our Trust, you’ll be supported through a comprehensive induction program that ensures you feel fully integrated and confident in your new role. We’re proud to support doctors working towards the Portfolio Pathway (formerly know as the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration – CESR), which offers a route to becoming a Consultant without completing a traditional UK specialty training program (CCT route).

The Portfolio Pathway is a competency-based process in which doctors compile a detailed portfolio of evidence showing that their training, qualifications, and experience match the standards set out in the Emergency Medicine CCT curriculum.

This evidence, covering four key domains defined by the General Medical Council (GMC), is reviewed by both the GMC and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM). Successful applicants are added to the Specialist Register, making them eligible to apply for substantive consultant roles in Emergency Medicine.

  • We offer secondments in Anaesthetics/Critical Care Medicine, Paediatrics, and Acute Medicine. Additional placements to support portfolio development are also available following a review by our RCEM-accredited CESR Lead clinician.
  • You’ll receive one-to-one support from an RCEM-accredited CESR Lead clinician, protected study leave, a full induction, and opportunities for leadership development.
  • Our programme is designed to give you the structure, support, and experience needed to successfully complete the Portfolio Pathway and move into a Consultant role.
  • You’ll join a team with diverse clinical interests, including point-of-care ultrasound, advanced resuscitation, paediatric emergency medicine, silver trauma, education, system design, medicolegal work, and more.

“I have been in Worcester for twenty months and have worked as a Specialty Doctor in the Emergency Department at Worcestershire Royal Hospital for nineteen months. Working in this department has been an incredibly valuable experience

This is my first job in the UK, and in Emergency Medicine and it was a completely new experience for me, as I previously worked as a general surgeon.

During this time, I have been given the opportunity and support to grow while learning how the system works. Thanks to the guidance of consultants and colleagues, I was quickly able to work independently within six months.

My children are happily settled in school, just a two-minute drive from my workplace, and my wife also works within the same Trust. Worcestershire offers a good number of places to visit, as well as local shopping options. It is well connected, with easy access to major cities like Birmingham, only a 30 to 40-minute drive away, which offers a wide range of shops, including Afro-Caribbean and Asian stores that stock a variety of familiar products.

Education is central to our values, and you’ll have many opportunities to teach, supervise, and support others. There are currently eight Educational Supervisors in the department all of whom are approved by the GMC. The Emergency Department is represented on the HEWM Emergency Medicine Training Committee, and supports the regional training programme for Emergency Medicine trainees. It also receives some of the best GMC feedback from trainee doctors in the Midlands region.

We also offer opportunities to become an Educational Supervisor or take on honorary academic roles, helping shape the future of emergency medicine.

The Alexandra Hospital has a multi-disciplinary education faculty that is accessible 24 hours a day.  The hospital is in close proximity to Birmingham University Medical School and the local teaching hospitals.

The Charles Hastings Education Centre at Worcestershire Royal Hospital is a £4 million facility featuring:

  • A 170-seat lecture theatre
  • Practical skills suites

Research is an important part of our work at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. We’ve recently launched an ambitious strategy to double our research activity over the next three years. As part of this, we encourage all post-holders to engage with research, stay informed about ongoing clinical trials, and refer patients where appropriate. Many of our doctors lead international clinical trials and work closely with academic and commercial partners. We actively support clinicians in engaging with research, referring patients to clinical trials, and developing their own studies.

Our Research & Development Department provides expert support:

  • Key areas of research include cellular transplantation, respiratory medicine, and cancer services
  • We’re a core partner in the Clinical Research Network West Midlands
  • We work closely with the University of Worcester and the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Research Consortium

We’re looking for Specialty Doctors in Emergency Medicine who have more than 2 years experience of working in an Emergency Department. and provide excellent clinical care to patients at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. You’ll also work with local General Practitioners (GPs) to deliver high-quality services in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary setting.

  • A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide an appropriate clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.
  • The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care.
  • Support the Emergency Department to make sure patients receive timely care and flow through the hospital efficiently.
  • Offer consultation and advice to clinical colleagues across the Trust and Primary Care.
  • Attend cross-county and cross-site meetings to collaborate with other teams and contribute to high-quality service delivery.
  • Work alongside colleagues to help achieve the Trust’s goals and meet the department’s objectives.
  • Join the middle-grade on-call rota to provide emergency and urgent care services outside normal working hours. To ensure on-call duties are shared equally.
  • Be ready to attend the hospital when needed for patient reviews during non-resident on-call shifts.
  • Provide care for minor injuries and emergencies, as well as other routine ED clinical work.
  • Support the Consultant team with daily patient reviews in the Clinical Decision Unit and ED review clinics.
  • Help with teaching VTS trainees, FY2s, and middle-grade doctors. You’ll also participate in training programs for Regional SAS Grade and Specialist Registrars where relevant.
  • Collaborate with the clinical governance lead to help develop the ED service and ensure we meet national targets.

  • Applicants should have at least four years of full-time postgraduate medical training (or the equivalent postgraduate training) with at least two of those years in a relevant specialty training programme or in a fixed-term specialty role (FTSTA). Alternatively, applicants shall have the equivalent experience and competencies of this specialist training.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to 4 years post qualification with minimum 2 years EM experience.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Capable of leading a resuscitation or trauma team. Knowledge in subspecialties like Trauma & Orthopaedics.
  • MRCEM or equivalent is desirable.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.

  • Ability to use evidence based and clinical audits to support decision making desirable
