The stroke service unit provides specialist assessment by a skilled multi-disciplinary team to optimise recovery. The team includes Stroke Consultants, neuro physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and stroke specialist nurses. There is access to Ophthalmology and Orthoptic services and the unit has strong links with the vascular team.

TIA clinics are held daily Monday-Friday on the stroke unit with access to CT scanning and carotid doppler ultrasound.

Other investigations available include MRI, echocardiogram, ECG and 24hr holter monitoring.

Patients admitted to A&E with a stroke within 4.5 hours of symptom onset will be rapidly assessed for their suitability to receive ‘clot busting’ treatment – thrombolysis is provided 24/7 with access to a 4 bedded hyper-acute bay situated on the acute stroke unit for post thrombolysis care.

Patients may undergo the following tests in order to confirm a stroke diagnosis and determine the cause:

  • CT scan (computerised tomography)
  • MRI scan (magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Carotid artery doppler
  • ECG

The stroke service team also work closely with colleagues in the community, once a stroke patient leaves hospital, they will have a follow up appointment with a specialist stroke doctor and another appointment with the multi-disciplinary team of stroke specialists.

  • Patient information

Please note that not all stroke patients are followed up by a consultant on discharge - patients who have out-patient tests will mostly be telephoned with the result by one of the stroke specialist nurses rather than having a face-to-face appointment.

There is lots of information available to patients who have had a stroke, which can be found on the stroke association website.

Other useful resources and information can be found on the county wide Worcestershire stroke service website.
