Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic

Most patients coming into hospital for an operation will be asked to attend the pre-operative assessment clinic. A pre-operative assessment involves a visit to the hospital where some tests are carried out to assess your health before you have an anaesthetic for surgery.

Our aims in the Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic are:

  • To assess how fit you are for surgery and anaesthetic
  • To ensure that you will be in the best health prior to the operation.
  • To help reduce your worries and concerns
  • To provide medicine advice before surgery
  • To provide information about your admission to hospital, your length of stay and your discharge date
  • To screen for infections

Before your appointment

If you have any questions, please write them down and bring them with you, so the nurse can answer them.

Please make sure you bring a list of all the medications that you currently take, including their strength and how often you take them

You can eat, drink and take your medications as normal on the day of your appointment.

Please note that we may contact certain patients and undertake their assessment by telephone

Changing or cancelling your appointment

Please tell us as soon as possible so we can offer your appointment to another patient.

This appointment is important preparation for your surgery. You must come to this appointment or let us know if you need to cancel or change it.

What will happen at Pre-Op Assessment?

  • The assessment will take between 1-3 hours depending on your health and surgery

  • Nasal and groin swabs are routinely taken from all patients to test for the bacteria MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).

  • Patients who have been in another hospital in the last 12 months will need screening for CPE

  • You may need some bloods taking and or a tracing of your heart (ECG) while in clinic

  • Certain patients may be seen by a specialist nurse or therapist if appropriate
