About the Alexandra Hospital

The Alexandra Hospital in Redditch was opened in 1985.  It serves a population of approximately 200,000 and has 360 beds.

The hospital is the major centre for the county’s Urology service.  The hospital has seven operating theatres, MRI and CT scanners and cancer unit status for breast, lung, urology, gynaecology and colorectal cancers.

There is a multi-disciplinary education centre with library, teaching and study areas. Our plan for the Alexandra Hospital is to increase the amount of planned elective activity carried out at the hospital, especially in orthopaedics.

A message to expectant mothers currently booked to have their babies at the Alexandra Hospital

To enable us to provide safe care, from 12noon on Thursday 5 November we temporarily transferred all births and obstetric inpatient services from the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch to Worcestershire Royal Hospital. There will be no births at the Alexandra Hospital from this date and time, so if you go into labour after 12noon from Thursday (5 November), please call the main delivery suite at Worcestershire Royal Hospital on 01905 760571, as you will be booked in to have your baby at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

All planned maternity procedures (e.g. elective caesarean section or induction of labour) currently booked at the Alexandra Hospital from 12noon Thursday onwards will also transfer to Worcestershire Royal Hospital. We are contacting all patients to organise their transfer, but if you have a procedure booked in the next month and have any queries, please call the main delivery suite at Worcestershire Royal Hospital on 01905 760571.

All antenatal clinic and day assessment appointments will continue in the same venue.

If your baby is due now, unless you have a different arrangement, you will be booked to have your baby at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, where we have capacity to care for mothers and babies, created through the new midwife-led birth centre and an additional new maternity ward at Worcestershire Royal that is fully operational from Thursday 5 November.

If you are earlier in your pregnancy and are concerned about your place of delivery, please speak to your community midwife or with your GP who can explore the options with you.

If you have an urgent enquiry about your care or needs, we have dedicated midwives taking calls each day from 10am to 2pm. If you would like to contact a midwife please call 01905 763333 and ask to be put through to a midwife.
